The city of Antioch is located in Contra Costa County, California. Situated along the San Joaquin-Sacramento River Delta, Antioch is part of the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area. According to the U.S. Census from 2014, Antioch has a growing population of approximately 108,930.
Antioch is one of the oldest towns in the entire state of California. In 1848, a ranch owner named John Marsh built a landing, referred to as Marsh's Landing - in the area that is present-day Antioch. Two years later, two brothers, William and Joseph Smith, founded a town to the west of Marsh's Landing called Smith's Landing. By 1851, the minister of the new town convinced the citizens to merge the towns. The city was named after the biblical city of Antioch, and was officially incorporated in 1872.
By the late 19th century, Antioch, CA was a major source for coal mines and copper. As time went on, these industries moved elsewhere. Antioch is considered to be mainly a "bedroom" community. Many of the population travels to the nearby cities of San Francisco and Oakland, CA for work and more. Today, Antioch is best-known for the Dow Wetlands Preserve, a park along the San Joaquin River.
